Our Story

The Shoucheng Zhang Foundation, previously known as the Zhang Family Foundation, was established in memory of Prof. Shoucheng Zhang, a visionary physicist and entrepreneur whose groundbreaking contributions to condensed matter physics earned him international recognition.

Incorporated as a private foundation in the State of California, we dedicate our resources, both in finance and in leadership, to initiate and promote scientific education and research in the United States, China, and around the world.

Our mission is to inspire the younger generation in their quest for knowledge for the benefit of mankind, continuing Prof. Zhang's legacy of innovation, education, and scientific advancement.

Key milestones in the foundation's history

Foundation Established
December 2018

The Zhang Family Foundation was established following Prof. Shoucheng Zhang's passing, with a mission to continue his legacy.

Memorial Workshop
May 2019

The foundation organized a memorial workshop at Stanford University to honor Prof. Zhang's scientific contributions and life.

Renamed to Shoucheng Zhang Foundation
January 2020

The Zhang Family Foundation was officially renamed to the Shoucheng Zhang Foundation to honor his legacy directly.

Education Program Partnerships

The foundation began supporting various educational initiatives, including AASF, Elevate Tutoring, and QFarm at Stanford University.

Barbara Zhang

Barbara Zhang

Chair of the Shoucheng Zhang Foundation and Founding Board Member of the Stanford Chinese Faculty and Family Club

Barbara Zhang is a seasoned technology leader with over 25 years of experience driving innovation and delivering impactful solutions. She holds a Master’s Degree in Applied Mathematics and Operations Research from SUNY Stony Brook. During her career at IBM, Barbara specialized in software development for language products, where she applied her expertise in programming, debugging, and database management to address complex customer needs. Now, Barbara channels her extensive expertise into the world of tech startups, where she invests in and mentors emerging leaders in the field. As the Chair of the Shoucheng Zhang Foundation, she continues to honor her late husband’s legacy by advancing pioneering research and supporting the next generation of scientists. Outside of her professional roles, Barbara is an avid tennis and pickleball player, and a gracious host who enjoys bringing people together. Above all, she cherishes spending time with two children and three grandchildren. She is also a Founding Board Member of the Stanford Chinese Faculty and Family Club.
